Combating Human Trafficking

Human trafficking mainly involving children and women sadly still an ongoing problem in Sri Lanka. We have established ourselves in 276 village divisions belonging to 19 districts around the island.

Awareness programs on anti-trafficking are being conducted in 170 divisions covering the coastal belt and the Hill country. In each Division there would be an Anti–Trafficking Committee (ATC), consisting of 15 trained volunteers.

Each volunteer is responsible for educating 20 families on how human trafficking is being operated. They training include its prevention and legal safeguards currently available for the victims of trafficking.

With one volunteer handling the task of educating 100 people our 4500 strong volunteer force assisted approximately 255,100 persons, through posters, leaflets, display stickers, street dramas, and training workshops.

Further 15,00 persons were educated in the two export promotion zones which has a large female factory worker population who had migrated to the Zones from distant places of the country seeking employment. These Zones are situated in the Western Province , within a radius of about 25 kilometers from the city of Colombo .

A n information center was established and a hotline was made available to the general public to make complaints or give information on trafficking and related issues.

We dealt with over a thousand cases and some cases are still pending with the relevant authorities.
