From the shadows of tsunami… Self Employment Project for the Tsunami affected On the Boxing Day (December 26 th 2004) the tsunami devastated the coastal belt of Sri Lanka . Many thousands were made homeless and lost all their belongings and livelihoods. In order to give them a start in re establishing themselves economically, we arranged skills training workshops for those affected. Four training workshops were conducted in the most affected areas such as Kalutara, Galle , Matara and Hambantota. We trained 60 people from each district in cottage industries such as incense stick making, candle making and exercise book manufacturing. A total of 240 persons were trained in the four Districts. At the end of the training JSSF provided a package of raw materials and tools for each person for their chosen self-employment project. In order to assess the outcome of the project, a survey was conducted 6 months later. The result was very encouraging. The beneficiaries are continuing successfully, and making good profits. The people conveyed their appreciation through the District Officers, who were also following up the progress of this self employment project. This project is still continuing.
